The race starts in Oceanside CA. The timed race ends at the Ram's Head Roadhouse on Generals Highway. Teams ride from there to City Dock via the Shell Station on Bestgate Road, for the ceremonial finish and celebration.
The eight come from various backgrounds; the riders the Wheelsucker knew were “roadies” riding on the Annapolis Bicycle Racing Team (ABRT), others were triathletes.
Kristin Seibert and Michelle Faurot have both ridden Tuesday evening ABRT training rides, so the Wheelsucker knew they were strong cyclists. But riding hard for an hour and a half is rather different from riding across the USA.
It took the team 6 days, 12 hours and 58 minutes to complete the race. They rode at an average speed of 19.1 mph, crushing the old record. Like all teams, they had one rider on the road at a time, and rotated riders. One group of four would be resting for eight hours, while the other group of four rode for approximately 20 minutes out of each 80 minutes.
The Wheelsucker is in awe of these ladies and their accomplishment.
