The Time Trial started in a C-130 Hercules at the museum, using the rear loading ramp as the starting ramp.
For more information on the C-130 Hercules (which was and is an exceptionally successful airplane) see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C-130_Hercules.

Ace, the Wheelsucker and Steve starting in that order - apparently due to the sort-by-last-name approach used by organizers -- in the 45+ field. Before the start they joked about waiting for Steve to catch on after his start, and then doing a Team Time Trial.
The C-130 loading ramp changed slope just before the bottom, becoming steeper. This created quite a bump as riders went from the steeper part of the ramp to the ground. From there, the route was initially narrow – marked by orange cones -- past a plane or two, a left turn into the museum parking lot, a 90 degree right onto the museum access road—with part of one lane marked by the cones -- and then a 90 degree left onto the main road. The route was out and back from there, with the finish on the main road, not returning into the museum area.
There was noticeable wind, mostly cross (left to right on the outbound leg), but more ahead on the outbound leg than on the return.
The excitement of the start, negotiating the narrow cone-marked route and the initial tight turns led the Wheelsucker to go out too hard (as he usually does), but once on the main road the Wheelsucker was head down, trying to be small, with average power back down close to his target power of 275 watts. But he was only seeing 21-22 mph. OUCH!
The course is not as flat as Church Creek. There are small rollers, some roughness in the road, and some shallow turns. Parts of the course were bordered by open field (more wind), but sometimes there were trees, houses or villages to provide some protection.
When he looked up the Wheelsucker could see riders ahead, but was not close enough to see if it was Ace, or someone he had caught and passed. If one gives Ace a 30 second head start he is going to be out of site up the road.
The turnaround was interesting. Riders continued straight onto a smaller road where the main road curves a little to the left. Then they took a 90 degree left after about 200 feet, then another slightly more than 90 degree left turn back onto the main road. Then it was around the shallow sweeping right turn and then follow the road and head for the finish-line tent.
Ace was going back the other way as the Wheelsucker approached the turn around. And as the Wheelsucker was leaving, he saw Steve approaching.
It was much faster on the way back with the wind more from behind. The Wheelsucker averaged over 27 mph, 4mph faster than the outbound leg and turns. The Wheelsucker caught and passed several riders, but never saw Ace up the road.
Expecting a 22 mile race, the Wheelsucker was caught a little by surprise when he looked up and saw the finish tent ahead and around a shallow right curve. Too late he started hammering for the line, crossed, hit interval and coasted back to the museum riding easy.
For cooldown the Wheelsucker followed Ace and Spencer Becket doing loops around the museum, riding through the parked airplanes, though the Wheelsucker started varying the route to check out each airplane.
Spencer, Leslie, Ace, Tina, Mike Wagner and the Wheelsucker searched for a restaurant for lunch; a task made much more difficult than expected since they were trying to avoid downtown Dover, due to “Dover Days” traffic. They finally found one; the Wheelsucker was so hungry he was unable to resist temptation and ordered – and ate – most of a fried onion load, French fries and a pulled pork sandwich. The Wheelsucker noticed that Mike Wagner had broccoli rather than fries, while Spencer had a salad. Hmn.
Steve Owens checked the results and gave us the basics. The complete results were posted not long afterwards.
Mike Wagner had the fastest time of the ABRTers. Way to go, Mikey!!

Steve Owens reports holding approximately 30 watts higher than the Wheelsucker on the outbound leg, but not gaining on him. So as one might expect from an aging Wheelsucker, limited power, but trying to get the most from it.
